There has been a lot of research in the medical field and this has yielded several new diagnostic tests and procedures that doctors can use to diagnose conditions. One such test is called electromyography. Often shortened to an EMG test, this tool is used to measure the strength of skeletal muscles. Examples of skeletal muscles include the biceps, triceps, quads, and other muscular tissue that is under the active control of the patient. An electromyography test is a nerve study that measures the speed and strength with which nerves pass through muscle tissue.
This muscle and nerve study can be used to diagnose several problems with skeletal muscle tissue. In general, a chiropractor is going to use this diagnostic test to diagnose issues that might impact someone's strength in their skeletal muscles. Some of the potential conditions that might be diagnosed include:
Of note, an EMG test alone cannot be used to diagnose these conditions. The results from an EMG test are combined with other evidence from diagnostic tools, the patient history, and a thorough physical exam. An EMG test is used to support or refute a diagnosis.
If the chiropractor feels that an EMG test is the next best step, this will be discussed in-depth with the patient. On the day of the procedure, the patient will be taken to a room with the EMG machine. The patient will be made as comfortable as possible. Then, the targeted area will be identified. Once it has been identified, the chiropractor will pass a small needle into the targeted muscle. This may feel slightly uncomfortable; however, the chiropractor and patient will be communicating the entire time. Finally, electrical stimulation will be passed into the muscle. This stimulation will be measured and the results will be collected.
