Do You Need a Therapeutic Massage?

Torrance Massage-Therapist Reveals 3 Questions to Ask for the Best Results

Get a therapeutic massage at this Torrance chiropractic officeTherapeutic massage has long been considered an alternative treatment, but it is gaining in worldwide popularity. In fact, “studies of the benefits of massage demonstrate that it is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension,” and “a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and well-being,” per the Mayo Clinic.

However, if you want a massage, there are several things to look for in order to have the best results possible. Here are some tips from our massage therapist in our Torrance office…

3 Questions to Ask Before Getting a Therapeutic Massage

1. What kind of massage is right for you?

Did you know that there are more than 250 variations of massage, bodywork, and various therapies? Here are some descriptions so you can figure out which technique is the best for your current situation.

  • Swedish Massage – This is a relaxing massage that involves kneading techniques and a combination of long, smooth and friction strokes to help reduce tension and remove toxins from the body.
  • Myofascial Release Techniques (MRT) – This focuses on the treatment of sports-related, repetitive-motion and soft-tissue injuries.
  • Deep Tissue Massage – This is a more intensive treatment that penetrates and loosens muscles in the connective tissue of the body. It is often used to help with long-term problems and injury prevention.
  • Shiatsu Massage – Here, a massage therapist applies pressure and stretching techniques to relieve muscle tension and joint stiffness and to help realign the body.
  • Trigger Point Massage – This system of massage focuses on points in the muscles that radiate pain to other areas of the body to help reduce that discomfort.
  • Prenatal Massage – This massage specifically helps ease discomfort during pregnancy including: joint stress, back, head, and neck pain, fatigue, sciatica, and more. It can also improve blood circulation, muscle tone, posture, flexibility, hormonal levels, and the nervous system.

2. Is the massage therapist certified?

When looking for a good massage, check for the appropriate certifications in your area. In California, therapists must complete, “at least 500 hours of massage education and training at a California Massage Therapy Council-approved massage therapy school and pass a CAMTC approved massage exam. Plus, they must complete at least 250 hours of education and training.”

And when you get to your appointment, look at the surroundings. It is clean, organized, private, and secure? The last thing you want to worry about during a massage is your privacy and having your wallet stolen!

3. What can I expect from the treatment?

If you are visiting a new massage therapist, call in advance and ask some questions. Find out about the various techniques used, how long the session is, fees, payment processes, how the facility is set up for privacy, parking, and more. Create a list of questions in advance so you can feel comfortable about your choice.

It’s also a good idea to talk to friends and family members to get referrals and ask about their massage experiences.
